btracht
good morning all
stormqloud
btracht:hey
btracht
hey stormqloud
stormqloud
sup
btracht
bigcouch is EOL??? will 2600hz be implementing couchdb 2.0 with newer kazoo releases?
stormqloud
yes
I dont; think coucdb2 is released yet tho
it's still pre-release
bigcouch was a fork of couchdb by cloudant
since then cloudant got bought by ibm
and I guess it's not part of IBM plan
btracht
looking to get space in a new datacenter and trying to figure out best server architecture
stormqloud
that's why I'm at Kazoo trining this week!
btracht
i wish i could be there
i was thinking 2 DBs in 2 datacenter
stormqloud
there is the 7 server setup
you want zones
btracht
i think so
stormqloud
you probabyl need to do a test cluster with zones before you can do a production one
btracht
would 8 server setup be the best setup then? 2 freeswitch, 2 kazoo, and 4 DB
then split between DCs?
stormqloud
honestly, I can give you opinions on that but I really don;t know
the serup I've seen many times is 7 servers per DC
2DC = 14 servers
VM's of course
not all real machines
http://www.powerpbx.org/content/kazoo-v3-single-or-multiple-server-voip-telephony-platform-install-guide-v1
btracht
i have 7 'real machines' now. how would you set up clusters?
stormqloud
that link talks abtou the 7 server setup and what they do
3 Bigcouch Database Servers, configured as a cluster
2 Freeswitch Servers
2 Kazoo Servers
btracht
thats what i have. i menat to use the 2 DC setup as virtual machines
stormqloud
you make 2 of these
btracht
which would you put together on virtual machines tho?
stormqloud
that's up to you I guess
Except maybe for a database machien I generally use VM's over real servers nowadays
kamaillio is a waste on a real server
mark2600
be wary of using VM's for a high volume system for servers handling media however (i.e freeswitch)
stormqloud
Persoanlly I've had great experience for freeswitch inside VM's
btracht
i'm just looking for the most reliable setup
stormqloud
even at high load
but everybody has thier own comfort level!
mark2600
what would you say is high load ? ;)
btracht
in case of hardware failure i have kept all servers on real machines so far
stormqloud
well I but a 3000 line system oin vm's a few months ago for alcient
we migrated my old setup for him from real servers to VM's
he couldn;t be happier
saves a ton on hosting and tells me it's even more reliable
but these are not cloud VM's btw
I need to be clar about that
mark2600
ah
stormqloud
I run my own VM's on my own hardware that I rent
mark2600
yea, i am not saying they are bad
stormqloud
I'm not interested in using a VM on some public pool
that is a recepie for disaster
mark2600
but I have run into situations in the past where they became problematic for me on media handling servers
stormqloud
how many calls per freeswithc?
mark2600
but thats not until you get into fairly high call volume
oh, was not using freeswitch at the time
stormqloud
Ilogging into my client now he is doing aroudn 250 calls per VM freeswitch
mark2600
250 per what period of time ? just 250 concurrently ?
stormqloud
250 up at once with a 10CPS rate approx
but there are optimizations
you don;t let freeswitch store info on disk etc
Kazoo has optimized all this already tho
really tho if you can do a couple hundred live calls on a freeswitch VM
that's more then enough for me
just add more FS after that for scale
mark2600
the biggest headache is people overloading a host and not realizing it
stormqloud
KAmaillio takes the big CPS load for registration, options, hackers etc
I run nagios to monitor and graph channels, calls, cpu etc etc
Freeswitch on it's own box is not a big deqal
you can;t go wrong doign it
it's not a total waste
Kazmillio on real hardware is a waste
mark2600
yea, i am inclined to agree there
stormqloud
bigcouch has lots of disk access so rel hardwar will always outperform VM's./
The nice thing abotu VM's is the administration
backup
snapshots etc
the downside is some performance for sure
mark2600
yea def
ultimately ops / system guys get to make that decision (because it is so much easier for them)
stormqloud
I'd rather nto worry abotu getting the last 30% out of the hardware and getting problems
just add a new server
yup
mark2600
not me, i want more power all the time ;)
but since i just manage a system for myself, i can have that luxury
stormqloud
I have used some VM's as 1 VM per server
so I get the VM features without sharing the hardware
some "hosters" even do this
you never get access to the "real hardware level"
you just run a single VM on thier hardware
mark2600
yea, i would imagine that is approaching the point of diminishing returns. but i really don't know enough about it
stormqloud
I've lots of experience with Xenserver and VMware over the years
for meI'm happier to leave the real hardware behond
mark2600
then you likely know far more then i do on the subject
heh
stormqloud
I'm getting tired of running to data centers to manage my own hardware
