also, ftbrony mysteriously shows the rainbow dash bottom screen image... only on the n3ds? I've never seen it before

there's nicely optimized drawing code in the soft renderer and mosaic couldn't work from that
which kinda sucks
I like how windows are implemented, though
avoids checking for them at every pixel

it's probably better to do mosaic as a post process
though if it's per-layer and you don't draw those separately then that's problematic

yeah
and if performance matters, drawing layers separately is a terrible mistake
even moreso with the weird priorities on the SNES
(you can give different priorities to individual tiles)
sprite priorities can also problematic with that approach
the SNES first renders all the sprites, associating sprite/BG priorities to the final pixels, and then merges that with the layers
which can give 'bad' results and those can be used on purpose
