Amperture
In theory, I haven't used it enough to say I'm fluent in it where you should value my opinion on C++
Spirilis
anyway this week my new curiosity is Android programming
Amperture
I really like C, and despise Java
Rickta59
what are you doing with that Spirilis ?
Spirilis
that's another thing that's a squirrely complex nightmare for a noob
eventually talk to a custom sensortag ble firmware for kicks
Amperture
https://github.com/Amperture/msp430-amperture-periphlib <--Still feel like it'd be nice to have notes written down on how to work with registers. Beware ugly code.
Rickta59
to be honest in the mcu world as sad as it is to say .. using arduino is the most likely path to code reuseablity
Spirilis
yes
arduino is the new bsp for the masses
Rickta59
looks like a start Amperture
you can steal the low level stuff from energia
i'm pretty happy with the SPI stuff i did for the g2553
* although looking at it they have changed the spirit of the util code
https://github.com/energia/Energia/blob/master/hardware/msp430/libraries/SPI/utility/usci_spi.cpp
Amperture
It feels kinda weird entering the job marketplace as an ECE specializing in embedded almost exactly the same time as Arduino REALLY taking off
Rickta59
i think of all the arduino ports .. the energia stuff is probably the most efficient
we had a working thing on a g2231 ( 2k flash / 128k ) ram
Amperture
Thinking about picking up Rob's 2995 target board.
Give me a little bit more breathing room for larger code, I think I'll eventually use it as the main controller for a 8266 project
If that's feasible, that is
Rickta59
why not just use the 8266
i got an email about this today
https://www.sparkfun.com/products/13287?utm_source=SparkFun+Customer+Newsletter&utm_campaign=2ca58c52dd-July_17thNewsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_fa5287abaf-2ca58c52dd-60592909
at $15 that is infinately more powerful than a g2553
Amperture
Man I like Sparkfun and Adafruit in theory.
Rickta59
infinitely
Amperture
Sorry I meant a G2955, or was it the G2995? The "beast" of the G2 family
Rickta59
yeah .. still serverly hampered
Spirilis
2955
Rickta59
the best msp430s i like now are the fram ones
Spirilis
yeah I built a launchpad target board for it too
Rickta59
i mean if you are doing msp430 stuff .. you probably care about low power
Spirilis
it's not bad but tbh the fram FR5xxx series are sweet enough I just don't care to bother with the G2955
Rickta59
the fr5xxx ..
lots of peripherals
treat fram like ram ..
20 bit isa
what more could you want
Spirilis
one more USCI_A
yep
Amperture
Y'all are going to tempt me into buying another Launchpad, aren't you?
Spirilis
FR5969 yo
Amperture
You know I'm unemployed, right?
Spirilis
or that sexy 6989
no but you were just talking about buying one of rob's boards :D
Amperture
Hmm
Does the 5969 come in nice hand-solderable package? Let me look
Unfortunately I really do find the DIP package appealing
Rickta59
the 5959 is tssop38 .. doable
you can sample those
what is the deal with sampling now ..
do they charge for shipping?
Amperture
last time I sampled, it was up to $15 and it "recharged" after a year
Rickta59
the last thing i sample was that fr5959 ... at the time * 18 months ago * it was free
Amperture
I thought sampling was just chips, you sampled a Launchpad?
Rickta59
and actually the only why to get the chip
no it was just a chip
i made a bo board
recharged .. what does that mean?
Amperture
They restrict you from sampling more than once per certain period
Recharge was just my lack of better term for it
Rickta59
the launchpad boards are actually an amazing value
especially the new ones with the energy trace
show me another vendor with that feature
Amperture
Making an assumption about what EnergyTrace is
Based on the name
I think SiliconLabs has some dev boards for ARM CM that feature on-board power consumption measurement
Rickta59
it is a combo of tracking the current used and knowing which function is being called when that happens
so you can say functionblah is a pig
works best with the chips that support energytrace++ on the chip ( fram .. )
but can give you a broad stroke on even the g series
but on the same vein TI are di*ks .. as olimex has offered this for a while on its msp430 jtag programmer
and TI just slashed the price to < $20
i can't see why TI partners stick with them .. they are constantly working again them
Amperture
Hmm, according to ti.com 5969 only comes in QFN
Rickta59
yeah 5959 is the one i mentioned
or 5949
Amperture
oh sorry
Rickta59
they have 64k instead of 128k
Amperture
Program memory?
Rickta59
fram 64k ram 2k
fram is used as flash ..
but you can also make believe it is ram
as it is just as fast as ram up to 8MHz
Amperture
hmmmmmmm
dammit
Rickta59
it doesn't have some of the 5969 advanced features
but it does use the msp430v2 arch
which gets you hw mult
and 20bit addressing
Amperture
and after I just went on an amazon and ebay spree buying sensors and actuators and sh*t
I'm going to end up buying another dev board, aren't I?
Rickta59
probaly not
you just got a working g2553
you could probably spend a year learning that well
Amperture
Yeah, but my roommate is looking for a project, and I'm thinking it may be out of range of the G2553
afk, just got package delivery notification
hooray, now I've got everything I ordered from Amazon
I'm starting to approach the point where it looks like I might have an embedded lab
