Rickta59
sometimes i come in via the web
but it would be just using webchat.freenode.net
heh .. they chopped it
ike
hello comrades
* just messing around ..
Rickta59
so where is ike lately?
so i subscribe to this thing called word of the day from merriam webster ..
every day they send you a word, it definition and it usually has some ads in the email ..
the other day the word was 'dubious'
and the ad i got that day ..
Donald Trump for President
made me laugh
today the word is

July 29
indomitable
incapable of being subdued : unconquerable
... but there is no Donald ad today : )
Spirilis
hahaha
Rickta59
membiblio: have you done any mixing of msp430 + android?
i finally upgraded my phone to something that isn't 10 years behind the times .. * a samsung android with 4.4
well maybe it is 10 years behind ; ) .. not sure actually
Spirilis
probably 2 years behind at worst
my phone is over 2 years old and running 4.4.2
g0rdon
mine is 4-5-6yo and running 4.0
so you are pretty good, rick :)
membiblio
Rickta59 - hello - yes but round about - I use cc3200 (?) IOT to go from wifi to CC430 as gateway
Rickta59
no ble stuff? or uart membiblio ?
membiblio
Hello Rickta59 howdy doody? :)
Say what what? What is no ble stuff?
I have seen some Chinese Serial to Wifi stuff on ebay is that which you speak of?
Rickta59
no ble stuff as in "I'm surprised you aren't using BLE devices with android"
membiblio
What is BLE please?
Rickta59
blue tooth low energy / BT 4.0
i've avoided android dev for a long time
but i guess it is going to be around for a while
membiblio
Rickta59 yes ok. Ugh. Bluetooth was not reliable for me in the past and only current handsets have Bluetooth Low Energy. Apple Iphone was first and my Nexus 5 has but that is just for point to point. What if I am in China and my hot tub needs adjusting? Hmm? :)
Rickta59
so i was just wondering the path of least resistance for using it with mcus
membiblio
(I don't have a hot tub)
I wish phones used something like ISM band TI stuff for local comms. But then again we have wifi.
Rickta59
so you think the way to go is wifi?
membiblio
Rickta59 are you on a IRC client or are you using a http irc thingy?
Rickta59 - it depends - let me preach my idea a moment:
Rickta59
i'm like Spirilis , and most people here . I use irssi
but occasionally when i'm on a tablet i might use the webchat.freenode.net
membiblio
Rickta59 - (Hexchat here) - So my thoughts are use Wifi or Ethernet on a ISM bridger router and then embedded devices use ISM band. I'm not a fan of giving EVERY device a IP address even though might be through NAT. What do you think?
Rickta59
i just want a device to give me an electric shock when my phone rings
membiblio
So wall switches talk ISM band to controllers and appliances to do things like cooperative load shedding.
Rickta59
so was thinking about how to have the phone do that when it is across the room
membiblio
Well your phone is attached to Wifi when home, right?
Rickta59
sometimes
* and actually it is the g/f i want to shock .. not me ; )
membiblio
Yes - for that application - shocking you - sure BLE would be fine. But somehow that does not seem - reliable - or something to me. I frown at it though it is just a feeling - I have no facts - but I still frown. Maybe I am old and prejudiced against bluetooth. It has NEVER been reliable for me.
Rickta59
yeah i don't have any bt things
membiblio
Oh... I think there is a company that makes IOT 'devices' for 'fun' replace your thoughts with my air quotes ones.
'You know what I mean'...
Rickta59
from an android app standpoint what is the easiest way write code to interface to some mcu external device
way to
membiblio
Yes Rickta59 - you are right - I agree with your thoughts on BLE - but I have not used BLE with Android - so I can't say for sure.
Are you making kinky stuff or utility stuff, suppose it could be the same thing right?
Rickta59
no .. it was just a way to get a laugh
membiblio
Oh... ok. :)
Rickta59
but i was really just asking about how to do simple things with android and an external mcu like an msp430
membiblio
But there is a company making that stuff. I used to listen to Derek and Romaine on XM and they talked about it. My ears perked up and I thought 'no freaking way' and THEN I thought - Oh what a missed opportunity to be famous :)
Rickta59
like if you asked me how to easily interface an msp430 to a pc i'd say use an ftdi dongle
if you asked me how to interface an msp430 to wifi i'd say get a different chip : )
membiblio
Search Bluetooth Low Energy on ebay and there are TONS of items.
Rickta59
sure ..
seems like wifi and some esp8266 would be pretty easy
membiblio
These Ebay items all come out serial ttl.
CC2540 for $6.87
Rickta59
but from and android app point of view ..
what is the easiest thing to write for
membiblio
I'm sure in Android there is a example for BLE serial.
Rickta59
ble is many things no?
serial is just one way to interact?
membiblio
Yes ble is probably many things like usb. hid...
Rickta59
* should go read a ble book
Spirilis
heh so I guess BLE on Android is something I'll be touching reasonably soon
BLE is a beastly protocol to grok just FYI, although the book I read was written by one of its main developers & proponents so it was necessarily in depth
it's not *that* complicated but oh boy ... there's more than meets the eye
sorta like android actually
lol
membiblio
Rickta59 did you say ESP8266? $2.88 on ebay. WiFi to serial
Rickta59
yeah they keep dropping
Spirilis
also, I am skeptical about any CC2540/CC2541 based cheap solutions. I've seen how the firmware works on those, fu*k if I am going to build anything external to one of those...
Rickta59
i bought some in the fall at $5
Spirilis
if it's just a cheap chip running the HostTestApp firmware, enjoy writing your own custom HCI stack for your MCU
Rickta59
hosttestapp .. that is an android sample?
Spirilis
and forget about it supporting anything vaguely resembling "low power", since you'll need the SMCLK spun up to drive the USCI peripheral to listen for serial inputs
membiblio
Spirilis - quite honestly if you do embedded you will be at home with Android - but you need to have command of a graphics tool like GIMP to build pretty and compelling interfaces. Without some graphics talent - you know.
Spirilis
no HostTestApp is the name of the firmware project for the BLE-Stack that gives you general "host controller interface" access to the chip's BLE facilities
Rickta59
k
Spirilis
that's the "typical" way a CC2540/CC2541 is implemented as an "external network processor" for BLE
membiblio: aye, I do have gimp although not too much graphical talent - but a good working knowledge of gimp from using it for years
and I definitely do feel my embedded C/C++ experience has given me a deeper appreciation for coding those kinds of things
the stuff I've read in my Wrox android 4 book has all felt fairly straightforward
Rickta59
i used to do java in the early days * 1996/7
but i haven't done anything since 2006
membiblio
Then you should be ok. You can start with backgrounds of various sizes. There are lots of library like components, like jquery but not jquery, to do compelling interface mechanisms like swipable panes.
