vigs
wow I missed a lot today, apparently
username1
?
vigs
There was just a lot of activity earlier today in this channel that I missed
Rickta59
heh .. sort of like an alien sighting ;)
vigs
haha right?!
Rickta59
you didn't miss anything vigs :)
vigs
I skimmed the scrollback anyway :P
Rickta59
every once and a while i try to inject some life in here
vigs
as you should
Rickta59
morning 43ohers
g0rdon
(Action) tips hat
Rickta59
* tips back
good to see you still around g0rdon
g0rdon
always
Rickta59
so last couple of days I've done an assement of my last 4 years mucking about with MCUs
g0rdon
lucky you - i can do that in about half a second
and come up with a disappointing result..
Rickta59
and I've come to the conclusion that TI actually does offer the best breadth of hw and software that can use it
and value for hobbyist money
and I'm not sure how that makes me feel : )
g0rdon
:D
Rickta59
I didn't feel that way 3 years ago ..
but they steadily moved towards what I wanted out of mcus
MrMobius: did you see that 6502 board?
on H-A-D?
jon1012
Rickta59, I'm feeling this for st these days
Rickta59, stm32f7 chips are available in qfp (so easier to solder than bga) and outrageously powerful
Rickta59
i've seen those and not thought of anything i want to do that would need them
too small to run linux
too big to blink lights
i guess your led wall could use them
jon1012
Rickta59, just big enough to blink tens of thousands of lights :p
hehe yeah
Rickta59
what do you use to code?
jon1012
gcc
Rickta59
the ST stuff seems to be headed down the HAL path
and i looked at that an puked
i guess you could just use cmsis headers and just go at the registers yourself
i downloaded the "OPEN"Stm32 thing
and it is anything but open
jon1012
yeah
you can also try with mbed
and export the gcc project
it works quite well
Rickta59
does that support the m7?
jon1012
officially yes, thier onmloine compiler no (at least when I checked last week)
but some people explained how to make it work with m7
and it works
(you have to git clone mbed repo and make a diff on a file)
Rickta59
i guess that is how i came to the conclusion that the TI stuff is the best of the bunch out there
jon1012
yeah
Rickta59
the hoops all the other vendors make you jump through
it is like they are saying ... fu user
jon1012
well.. for TI I never got it to work correctly under linux
the dev environement are all paid for
Rickta59
with CCS 6 that is finally working well
jon1012
"you want chips with more than 1k ram ? pay !"
Rickta59
and you can use the gcc for free
jon1012
s/ram/flash/
yeah
Rickta59
with the others you are basically on your own
and their APIs are all super bloated
not to say there aren't frustrations with the TI stuff
jon1012
the mcu I want to try are the renesas... but it's even worse speaking of dev env
http://www.renesas.eu/products/mpumcu/rz/rza/rza1h/index.jsp
Rickta59
if you can wait 2 or 3 years they might actually address my complaints
yeah i never looked at those
jon1012
10mb ram, 400mhz cortex A9...
Rickta59
ah
have you jumped to those for your led wall?
jon1012
nope, but I'm looking at them, but I don't know where to start :)
it looks clearly powerful
Rickta59
what does a dev board like that go for?
jon1012
I have no idea :)
Rickta59
seems like there are so many choices in that space
jon1012
yeah
Rickta59
so are you using the ST m4 stuff now?
jon1012
yeah still using it
Rickta59
and their std perp lib?
jon1012
I ordered some pin compatible stm32f7 to test on my boards
and I have a couple stm32f7 discovery boards sitting on my desk
Rickta59
does that just take your m4 code and run it faster if you drop it in?
jon1012
yes, this and libopencm3
Rickta59
i've heard it is supposed to work that way
jon1012
I guess so, haven't tried yet
I have to recompile the st libs with the correct flags for it to work I think
Rickta59
bb in a few
zlalanne: seems like they fixed the CCS bug with __WFI for arm-none-eabi-gcc .. thanks
Spirilis
wait for dat interrupt, beeeyotch
^ where's the intrinsic for that
__WFDIB
Rickta59
?
Spirilis
fleeting moment of goofiness
Rickta59
ah .. sorry .. i was in a serious frame of mind
:)
Spirilis
lol
Rickta59
they just put a speed tracking device at the end of my street
Spirilis
ugh
Rickta59
i've been out there doing speed runs on my bicycle
heh
