Rickta59
so i want to make something with the msp432 .. any suggestions?
trying to figure out its place in the world
compared to an arduino it is kick ass
is that its place ?
to kick ass on the arduino?
although it lacks usb .. although I'm not sure that is a negative
it does have a dedicated back channel UART
so you don't waste cycles servicing usb
amstan
that is a negative... sorry
Rickta59
you think that is a negative for an arduino killer
or for something else?
amstan
yes
arduino has usb too, on some of them
and with pretty comprehensive demos
like keyboards and so on
Rickta59
i don't see people really doing anything with that though
did you use the usb on the stm32s?
i have done some stuff with my stm32f103c8s and usb ..
but i think i would use 2 if i really wanted to do usb
one to handle the usb and the other to sit behind the usb
amstan
why would you do that?
Rickta59
seems like usb chews up a lot of the cpu
* no metrics just a gut feeling
amstan
i did some data transfer tests with stm32f405
Rickta59
405 isn't a 103
amstan
i can get 256KB/s with usb
via cdc acm
why are you using the 103?
Rickta59
but how much time does it spend respond to usb pings
cause they are < $5
amstan
that's like using msp430f1 chips instead of the G line
get yourself an stm32f072 if you want to do nice usb
it's a newish chip
Rickta59
that is a cortex-m0+ no?
no hw div ... lacking lots of m3/m4 stuff
i don't want to really do usb .. i was comparing he msp432 .. * lacking usb * and I feel it isn't a negative
amstan
does avr have hw div?
Rickta59
i think it does actually
but avr's aren't on my radar
avrs actually create smaller fp stuff compared to an msp432
avrs actually create smaller fp stuff compared to an msp430
because it has hw mul and div
amstan
the linux kernel does a lot of stuff without fp
so i don't see why you would need it on an mcu
Rickta59
if you want to make it into a gcode 3d printer processor you might
although you can use fixed point ..
amstan
yep
Rickta59
but the marlin/reprap crap uses fp
and that seems to be the most popular
amstan
*1024/1000
Rickta59
i like the msp432 board ..
lots of exposed i/o
lots of ram
lots of flash
familiar msp432
amstan
hmm
Rickta59
msp430 peripherals
amstan
(Action) goes back to rk3288
Rickta59
heh .. those are pretty neat too :)
what's the deal with rockchip ..
didn't they get bought by intel?
amstan
i don't think so
Rickta59
won't the rk3288 become a dead end?
amstan
just clickbait articles
Rickta59
i thought i read something last fall about rockchip and intel
seemed like they stopped focusing on arm after that and pivoted toward intel cpu
i was all set to buy one of those firefly dev boards and then intel seemed to corrupt them
what are you working with amstan ?
have you seen this:

amstan
you know.. the hardware that google and our partners made for the past year..
yes, i had one until yesterday
didn't get much going on it
Rickta59
what did you think of it
that used to be ~$129
amstan
the software that it comes with is crap
you need to compile your own kernel from upstream
Rickta59
k
amstan
and the 3.14 kernel from chromeos won't really work on it, it had quite a few hardware differences
Rickta59
seems kick ass hw
amstan
Rickta59: why don't you just go to the nearest wallmart and buy a hisense chromebook 11
it comes with the same hardware, a screen, a battery, keyboard, a charger
Rickta59
what is on that?
amstan
and in this nice case too, some call it a laptop
it's the same thing
rk3288
at $149
Rickta59
the thing that appealed to me was the dev board pinouts
you really don't get that with a laptop
amstan
if you're into echo "1">/sys/gpio/whatever/whatever/somegiantnumber/146
Rickta59
so it is pretty lame?
amstan
if you want a real developer friendly board you should get a beaglebone
Rickta59
yeah i have one of those
2 actually
amstan
so why would a firefly board be more attractive to you then?
Rickta59
quad
amstan
hmm
Rickta59
the single core bb is dog slow
amstan
ok, can't argue with that
rk3288 is fast..
