Rickta did you see that http://visualgdb.com/tutorials/esp8266/
it's olimex ad
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ESP8266-ESP-01-AP-STA-WIFI-Remote-Wireless-Module-WIFI-to-UART-Module-/191542840815?hash=item2c98d7cdef
$2.59 free shipping to europe
Rickta59
yeah i have a couple of those ike
ike
but do you have jtag debug for them?
Rickta59
i'm afraid of it
no I haven't tried to figure out jtag
i started looking
and decided i'd let someone else figure it out
ike
http://visualgdb.com/w/tutorials/category/tutorials/embedded/arm-quickstart/
there are other tutorials there
Rickta59
yeah all that stuff is windows no?
ike
you know how to run virtual machine and how to steal win XP right?
Rickta59
yeah no desire
ike
new sh*t is apple OS apps
so nowdays kids ask can I run that on my mac
so at least it's windows now max
mac
Rickta59
yeah .. reading now
that xt-ocd thing
was not something available 6 months ago
that seems to be newly available
i guess i should get one of those j-link clones from ebay
i have a pile of nrf24l01+ that i should be putting to use though
before i waste time on the esp8266

I'm completely new to MSP430 stuff. I've mainly done AVR and ARM things in the past but I'm basically bashing my head here
Not a single document I've found gives viable C-based examples of how to use the peripherals (initialization, etc)
Is there some document for that? All I can find is some references to what to do in assembly
For example in the user's guide http://www.ti.com/general/docs/lit/getliterature.tsp?baseLiteratureNumber=slau056&fileType=pdf
Rickta59
which chip are you working with Striker| ?
Striker|
MSP430FR4133
Rickta59
so the secret ...
Striker|
I've got the devkit. Actually I've got maybe 5 of them. Handed out like candy at an invent
*event
Rickta59
is to go to the product page for the msp430fr4133
Striker|
I'm trying to adapt I library I suspect is for the MSP430G2 to it but I think I'll deal with my clear lack of understanding of the peripherals first.
Rickta59
yeah the g2 stuff is nothing like the fr4xxx stuff
http://www.ti.com/product/MSP430FR4133/toolssoftware#softTools ..
the first zip there ..
code examples
that shows you how to use all the peripherals for the chip
in both c and asm
ccs .. and iar
and asm
the c code has been written to work with either ti ccs compiler or msp430-elf-gcc
* interrupt usage is different mostly
for the msp430fr4133 launchpad ..
there is probably a "project 0"
hmm .. i don't see it
as it is usually on the launchpad page
http://www.ti.com/ww/en/launchpad/launchpads-msp430-msp-exp430fr4133.html#tabs
ah .. there it is
http://www.ti.com/tool/msp-exp430fr4133 on the lower part of this page is a link
http://software-dl.ti.com/msp430/msp430_public_sw/mcu/msp430/MSP-EXP430FR4133/latest/index_FDS.html
beware of the latest msp430-elf-gcc ... with the msp430frxxx chips .. the libc stuff was compiled wrong in the binary
Striker|
:|
Rickta59
and you won't be able to use things you would expect to use .. like atoi() .. etc
if you avoid libc stuff the compiler works
Striker|
What compiler does CCS use?
Rickta59
or you can recompile the msp430-elf-gcc
CCS can use either TI c compiler or msp430-elf-gcc
the TI compiler is code size limted though
not sure what the max is for the msp430fr4133 .. probably 16k of code
of course msp430-elf-gcc has no limit
if you are just getting started you can download CCS and get a 90 day ? trial
not sure might be 30 days
Striker|
Huh...where do you changing the compiler? I feel like I'm missing something obvious. Don't see it under Compiler in options
Rickta59
you probably didn't install it
Striker|
Ah okay. I'll keep that in mind for later then
Rickta59
it is something you have to explicitly install
find the app center
there are lots of extra things to install
* under help menu i think
did you use gcc with arm?
you get a one time choice to select the compiler when you setup the project
Striker|
gcc with ARM and with AVR
Rickta59
so eventually you can use msp430-elf-gcc
Striker|
Actually recently it was all the Keil Compiler for ARm
Rickta59
when they fix the libc issue
or if you get antsy you can fix yourself
Striker|
Is that an ETA of "eventually" or "a month or two"?
Rickta59
i don't know .. i asked and didn't get a real answer
i just recompiled myself
https://e2e.ti.com/support/development_tools/compiler/f/343/p/417242/1609624#1609624
and the "it has been a few days" was completely sarcastic as it had been multiple months
to be honest i avoid their libc anyways
but i was testing something and it was using libc stuff
and it bit me
Striker|
This is unrelated but downloading CCS and having to fill out the Export Info made remember that was a thing for freely distributed online code. It's so weird.
Rickta59
so yeah .. under "Help/CCS App Center" ... you can find the optional install stuff
you can download the source without filling anything out
if you pick the installer ... they make you fill out the crap
Striker|
"We can't give this program to certain countries so fill out this form saying you're not from those countries"
"Kay"
Rickta59
where are you?
US?
Striker|
Yes
Rickta59
yeah it is a bunch of bull ..
