cambazz
hello, for a tiva-c series board, is there a more precise thing than micros(), i mean a better way to get current micros()
Spirilis
no
not in energia right now rather
you'd have to use a timer peripheral and sample it when you need the info
ike
hi cambazz
g0rdon
my furry comrade!
jubatus
what's this news about 32bit MSP430s ?
ike
msp432
jubatus
what a load of crap
its an ARM
why do they feel the need to create confusion by calling it an MSP432 ?
IcePic
/join #43arm
;)
jubatus
if you claim to be peddling a 32bit MSP430 I expect to see the same ISA.
i guess the MBAs have taken over control at TI
ike
we don't need another 32bit arch
msp430 is a nice 16bit arch
and arm is a nice 32/64 bit arch
and it was about time
everyone have arm chips
except for microchip
they have mips
g0rdon
as much as it hurts me to say this
the fellow commie is right
how braindead would you have to be to come up with another 32bit isa, just for the sake of coming up with a new 32bit isa?
(quick answer: very)
IcePic
"We are the companies that say NIH!"
not-invented-here.
Rickta59
i think they like to call it a msp43x based on the peripherals
Spirilis
yeah it's ARM but they did bolt in a bunch of MSP430 peripherals
and for folks who use compilers and C/C++, that's more important than the stupid ISA
well, the FPU on the MSP432 (Cortex-M4F) also affects C/C++ users a bit, in that it's a new option that doesn't suck as much now
ike
some people will find msp432FR usefull
imagine 1MB of fram + 32kb of sram
Spirilis
meh I say fu*k msp430x
msp432FR would be nicer
well it wouldn't be 1MB FRAM anyway, there's only 1MB of address space total, but yeah
ike
1MB on 32bit cpu??
Spirilis
er nevermind I am crosseyed today
you did say msp432FR ;)
thought I had read msp430FR
Rickta59
you would lose the performance advantage there .. fram would really drag it down speed wise
* was just looking at the tm4c1294 datasheet ..
the EPI .. interesting
the QSSI (Quad SPI) .. interesting
ike
sometimes you don't need a lot of speed
just a lot of fram
and if cpu is not harvard, but it's Von Neumann architecture then you can run small critical sections in sram
Rickta59
all the arm stuff can run code from ram
cortex-m arm stuff
ike
some ARM are harvard
I don't know you you can write software
if you are not sure what you got
Rickta59
what do you mean ike
Spirilis
well msp432's harvard has that separate instruction bus for sram
so you can run from ram but you have to fu*k with the linker scripts to get the addresses right...
Rickta59
who doesn't love linker scripts
ike
Rickta59 I'm not sure ;)
look at this table
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARM_Cortex-M#Silicon_customization
M0, M0+ and M3 are Von Neumann
M0, M0+ and M1 are Von Neumann
and M3, M4 and M7 are Harvard
Rickta59
well ti doens't sell m3/m0+/m0
ike
and msp432 is M4
so ... can it run code from sram?
like msp430
Rickta59
yeah it is harvard .. but as Spirilis said you can run from ram
ike
you have done that, right?
Rickta59
yeah
but it is easier just to say the hell with the wait states and just run from flash at full speed
oh and crank up the clock while you are being bad
ike
but your program may not run at 85*C/ 185*F
Rickta59
the whole point of the msp432 is to make people feel warm and fuzzy about arm while giving them a flat address space, lots of ram, and lots of flash
if you can do that at 48Mhz .. you are 2x the normal msp430 and gain all kinds advantages
the instruction set is a lot better with its mul/div ops
you can actually do an rtos with it
32 bit
compiler support
ike
... so you are saying that ... lpc1114 is better than msp430
Rickta59
tools
ike
;)
Rickta59
in some ways
ike
I told you that years ago
Rickta59
but i think the ti people have focused on the power side of it
ike
well the good thing is that TI listened
Rickta59
* at least that is how they are marketing it
me personally i have never cared too much about low power
all the things i want to do aren't battery powered
ike
the bad thing is that I can't buy 32 bit arm borad for $4.30
Rickta59
why not?
lots of those now
* ebay of course
ike
of course
Rickta59
free shipping too
ike
so the whole sh*t about msp430 low power mcu ...
is that is all they have
low power
Rickta59
simple architecture
ike
only thing they have, low power
