Natacha
has anyone here managed to profile a program with tasks?
I would really love to understand how the 10s loading time is spent, but when I compile with -pg, I get a core dump, showing that task activation triggers a Storage_Error exception which triggers a Storage_Error exception which triggers a &
sparre
:-(
The GNAT checks raising Storage_Error may be cheated by the instrumentation.
Have you tried without passing that flag to GNAT.
But no, I've never tried myself.
nerdboy
what about the metrics though?
do you get stuff like comment density/macabe's/other?
the report format is okay, but the content is what i care about...
Natacha
sparre, which flag? all I have is S_E with -pg and everything fine without
darkestkhan1
sparre: program consisting of only packages is not an extension; it s execution is basically elaboration of all packages
charlie5
Natacha: valgring has a flag to split profiling into tasks
not sure about the Storage_Error
Natacha
valgrind segfaults too :-(
charlie5
(Action) wonders how to profile ada runtime/constructs (ie protected type ot taksing overhead)
-pg -> ignore all checks ?
(Action) should check
Natacha
-pg is enabling gprof intrumentation
charlie5
oh
nerdboy
>>> net-libs/webkit-gtk-2.8.4 merged.
charlie5
i knew i'd seen it b4
Natacha: is the code public ?
Natacha
not yet
charlie5
nw
Natacha
I guess I should try to build a smaller test case and publish it
charlie5
nw -> no worries
(Action) asserts his aussiosity
Natacha
it's just that I'd like to sustain my "one commit per day" streak on github
charlie5
:)
Natacha
so I'm sort-of buffering commits, and the issue is not yet out of the buffer
charlie5
as opposed to my 6+ monthly commits (locally)
Natacha
I also like the mental challenge of working without SCM, and yet still have some safety/fallback if things went wrong
charlie5
heh, sparre shed the light on usefulness of version control for me .... "it's like an 'undo' button for code changes"
(Action) likes 'undo' buttons
Natacha
yeah, but I seldom need it that way (maybe thanks to my SCMless training?)
I more often use it as "why the !@# did I write that!?"
charlie5
lol (literally)
my usual excuse is 'oh ... i must have been very tired that night' ... (ho ho)
Natacha
usually when that I happen, after reading the whole commit, I'm like "oh, right, that's why, glad I did it that way"
-I
charlie5
(Action) gets that now and then
well, more often than not ;)
better with ada tho
easier to see what is going on ... esp after a few months away from the code
(Action) did a year with c+ code ... then a year later could not follow it
well, barely
hmm, for all the ada online rpg fans out there (of which there is at least one) ... that architect (building creator) app is more or less working okish
building can be saved/restored at least
Natacha
(Action) would love meeting Ada in a Castle Falkenstein RPG game
charlie5
the ui need some improvement, but that should be mostly trivial
(Action) eyes ThomasLocke
i've not seen Castle Falkenstein (til i googled it just now)
(Action) dares not look at other games for fear of giving up
wow
Natacha
I'm not sure how it would work online though
charlie5
there is a gurps version ?!
(Action) 's ada rpg system is loosley based on gurps
Natacha
yes, but I'm quite fond of the original system
though I miss fumbles and critical successes
charlie5
hmmm
Natacha
I love the integration of the rules with the settings
charlie5
(Action) maybe too old for steampunk
ever try 'call of cthulu' ?
Natacha
like dices are considered vulgar in the Victorian era, so it uses playing cards as source of randomness
charlie5
gurps always seemed sensiblest rpg rules to me ... skill based advancement ... every character different
Natacha
Yeah, I played a bit, but I tend to bond too much with my character for that game
charlie5
(Action) dislikes the d&d class system
Natacha
(Action) dislikes all class systems
charlie5
heh, cards (esp tarot) do add flavour
Natacha
I think I would love Castle Falkenstein system even more with tarot cards
charlie5
heh, i'll look at it closer and see if i can fit any bits into the 'dream' game
'atmosphere' is almsot entirely lacking from games (to my admittedly out-of-date eye)
Natacha
I'm carefully choosing my games and players so that it doesn't lack
Or at least, used to, I haven't played for more than a decade :-)(
:-( i meant
charlie5
aaawwwww
(Action) was about to enlist
or request such
Natacha
I would love to role play again
just unsure whether it really works online
charlie5
tbh, i haven't played for a looooong time either
Natacha
and not enough friends geographically close enough to play for real
charlie5
i think i know what you mean ... there is nothing like sitting around a table seeing each others reactions ... making spontaeous jokes
harder over the net (at least with just text)
is geo-closeness that much a factor re online games ?
i guess for fast action games it must be
Natacha
and video-conferencing is so difficult to make it work, it feels like 20th century
charlie5
rpg is a little slower paced tho
Natacha
slow-paced online games (like pbem) don't have the geo-closeness thing
But that might be too slow for rpg
charlie5
"just unsure whether it really works online" ... well, my take on this (handling players being offline most of the time) was to set up some sort of 'standing orders' system ... where players could state their usual routine (+ how to handle unusual situations (ie hit by someone -> attack them vs flee)
(that sounds simlish but is just the basic idea)
simplish
(Action) drops standing orders bit
pbem -> play by emial ?
eail
Natacha
yes
charlie5
ugh
e m a i l
(Action) gets it at last
