charlie5
for i in #ada.members'Range
i.join (proj.rpg);
end loop
;
bah
i muffed it of course
for i of ...
Visaoni
I must admit, the /last/ thing I expected to find in #Ada was an rpg game project of all things
charlie5
really ?
as luke says, ada is pretty good for games
Visaoni
usually game-folk are more uh... immediate-results driven
charlie5
+ there is none of that 'if i make a mistake, the pane will crash' sort of pressure
Visaoni
good sense or otherwise :)
charlie5
pane -> plane
panes crahsing is alos not good :)
glug, sick of correcting typos ... hope that's ok
Visaoni: 'immediate-results driven' -> pays off well commercially, i expect
Visaoni
I've grown used to it by now :)
maybe. then you have things like a big AAA getting pulled from Steam for being horrifically broken :)
well
pulling itself*
charlie5
but like i said, no game i've seen have any sort of 'atmosphere' ... they are derivatives of derivatives of derivatives of derivatives of derivatives of ..
heh
you lost me on big AAA
but then i was ranting again also, so np :)
steam is a web game thing ?
Visaoni
you um
don't play games much do you? :)
charlie5
(bear in mind that the last game charlie solved was zork)
lol
just so
like i said
Visaoni
big AAA - term for big budget games produced by big companies
charlie5
if i look at a modern game, i think i have no chance of 'competing'
not that i want to compete commericallly
Visaoni
Steam - more or less /the/ PC digital retailer these days
charlie5
ah, ok
specing
if anyone feels gameishly, the Spring RTS project is in serious need of a proper lobby server and client
Visaoni
(Action) might spend far too much time playing and thinking/talking about video games
charlie5
nawwww ... not enuff !!!
(Action) wishes he had followed his fancy and done puter games back in the 80's
... when they were all a helluva lot easier :)
specing
most multiplayer games I've seen are hilariously insecure
Visaoni
I don't know, game dev is pretty notorious for chewing people up and spitting em out :)
charlie5
Visaoni: meet Lucretia
Visaoni
although, charlie5, there has been a big resurgence in the so-called "indie" scene
charlie5
specing: insecure in whch respect ?
Visaoni: i'm not surprised
Visaoni
so, if you were ever looking for a time - lots of solo or small teams pushing things out these days :)
charlie5
the game play is so dull
Visaoni
charlie5: oh? Lucretia used to do game dev or something?
charlie5
hell ... that's not fair ... like i say i've not really seen new games (or even ones 10 years old)
specing
charlie5: e.g. they download engine binaries without checking any hashes or signatures(none exist) and over plain http from sourceforge
charlie5
but in almost every case, it has been 'visuals' over gameplay :/
Visaoni
if you were looking for some modern games charlie5
charlie5
specing: well, i would only try to deliver code via opensource ... who could trust it otherwise ?
Visaoni
they aren't exactly mainstream um, at all, but you might try looking at some stuff from Zachtronics. I do have some quibbles with the most recent Infinifactory, but certainly all the rest...
charlie5
Visaoni: yep, luke is tho only person i know who has worked in games industry ... the report he gives is not good :/
Visaoni
he does fun things like turn language acceptance (I think with just DFAs) into a game
charlie5
language acceptance into a game ?
not sure how you mean
i wanted to use an ada 'script' like lang to alow wizards in rpg to write their own spells
Visaoni
like um... given an alphabet of 'a' and 'b', a language might be all strings with alternating 'a' and 'b'. given a string, see if it is part of the language or not
charlie5
... any spell resulting in an axception would cost the wizard darly :)
dearly
exception
Visaoni
Ada is much too safe for that
you should make them use Python
the problems I've had show up days/weeks after "finishing" something quick...
charlie5
no way python
:0
Visaoni
it would be much more exciting if you were never quite sure you'd covered all your bases and any new situation might blow everything up :)
charlie5
:)
hardly know it myself
BASIC was the python of my age ;)
sparre
Natacha: I was thinking of "-fstack-check", as it may do some magic to give a storage error instead of a segmentation fault.
charlie5
(Action) pretends to be the ancient mariner
sparre: i think i scared her away :/
Natacha
actually it's just a very flaky 2G connection and the dull work I'm supposed to finish within the next 5 hours
4 hours actually
charlie5
3
yep, np ... keep forgettin gother ppl's have deadlines
Natacha
really 4, I just miscarried
erm misplaced the carry
charlie5
um, s/gother/other/
amusing as gopher might be :)
Natacha
btw we still need a gopher server in Ada ;-)
sparre
darkestkhan1: Now that I've re-read 10.2, I can see that the specific case of only packages isn't an extension.
Natacha
(and I am in a European timezone where we are in office hours, right after lunch break)
darkestkhan1
charlie5: what kind of atmosphere you want? witcher 3 has its own atmosphere... so does morrowind... and fallout... and arcanum... and baldur's gate... [wait, most of these are 10 years old... game industry is regressing...]
Lucretia
charlie5: yeah, finding freely available models is hard, but there are some
the sites that are available are difficult to work out if they can be used, due to number of polygons as they never say how many polys there are
Visaoni: you say games? I don't consider football management games, games.
Natacha
sparre, -fno-stack-check doesn't help, it sill coredumps with the same kind of backtrace
Guest89543
try running under valgrind
Natacha
<signal handler called> / thr_sighandler() / handle_signal() / system.interrupt_management.notify_exception / __gnat_rcheck_SE_Explicit_Raise / __gnat_raise_storage_error_msg / ada.exceptions.exception_propagation.allocate_occurrence / system.exceptions.machine.new_occurrence / __gnat_malloc / system.tasking.initialization.abort_defer / <signal handler called>
valgrind coredumps too
but I can't even interpret valgrind's coredump
Guest89543
it doesn't print anything before dumping core?
Natacha
no
