antranigv
Ada is love ^_^
Lucretia
did you install the gnat stuff on there, cos charlie5 wants feedback
charlie5
antranigv: howdy ... let me know how it goes if you try the archy ada pkgs ... gps is maybe still troublesome ... it balks if python3 is installed :/ ... still working on the fix
the others should be mostly ok
antranigv
charlie5: I'll do that at the weekend for sure, I'll leave a feedback. btw, anyone interested in having gnat on maemo?
charlie5
antranigv: cheers
Visaoni
charlie5: heh, I hate lectures :)
they aren't inherently bad, but virtually nobody knows how to use them
charlie5
Visaoni: depends hugely upon the lecturer and the subject, imho ;)
(Action) states the obvious yet again
Visaoni
also the audience
charlie5
heh, i may be getting a little nostalgic also
Visaoni
not so bad to have an in-depth "presentation" (more discussion) with 5 people
charlie5
yep
i went to a small uni, no more than 20-30 ppl per lecture tops
Visaoni
even that's far too many
charlie5
tutes, were better
lecture was 'absorb info' ... tute was 'questions'
Visaoni
anything I've ever needed to go to a lecture for was better learned from a book
anything I've *wanted* to go to a lecture for was just fun
and informative, but really it's moderately cerebral entertainment
charlie5
i guess ppl can get to the stage when they can teach thenmselves as well from good books
Visaoni
maybe I'm just strange, but having a lecturer just messes me up. things that are obvious to me take forever, things that aren't are practically skipped over. I don't have time to put everything together
so I end up rolling with assumptions because "well that's what was said"
charlie5
moderately cerebral entertainment is better than what the 'tube' offers
Visaoni
has come back to bite me in the ass repeatedly
charlie5
(not utube)
sounds like you may need to take a more advanced course :)
as in lecturer is concentrating on simple things and ignoring harder stuff ?
Visaoni
I try my best not to trust professors, but sometimes those little sound bites worm their way in and get stuck anyway without me noticing
sort of? it's more like the whole thing they're presenting works... if you don't ask too many questions
charlie5
professors use sound bites ?!
(Action) thought that was for tv starts and pollies
stars
Visaoni
well, what I mean by that is somethign they say as a conclusion or whatever gets in my head
and I take it as truth, even though I should know better
usually this pops up when I'm a bit rushed :)
charlie5
i guess you have to try to fileter out what is sense and what isnot
Visaoni
yup, exactly
I Just don't have time in lecture to do that 100%
when reading it's not a problem
charlie5
heh, ideally, you shouldn;t have to
Visaoni
I hit some "simple" sentence that throws a monkey wrench in things and I can go spend an hour and a half figuring it out
charlie5
heh, we all get that ;)
Visaoni
it's just that in the middle of lecture you can't, so then you end up getting the rest of the information with that unresolved issue and you're just using what the lecterer said to process it
charlie5
(Action) hits a simple bug that throws a monkey wrench in things and I can go spend a week and a half figuring it out
luckily, i'm not getting paid by the hour
hmm, in fact, i'm not getting paid at all :)
Visaoni
ha! sounds about right :)
charlie5
does lecturer allow q's at end ?
Visaoni
depends
it's nearly never useful
q's are usually about basics they're taking for granted or whatever
charlie5
heh, leaves 2 mins probly
Visaoni
even if you can get them to understand the q, they give you the sound bite answer
charlie5
you have tutes also ?
Visaoni
did before, don't now
usually my q's there ended with "huh, good question... I'll have to look into that"
or "yeah, we're lying"
charlie5
as i said, to me , lectures and tutes work together pretty well ... we had diff ppl to give lecture and tute,
Visaoni
yeah, grad students did our tutes
when they spoke english it could be okay
charlie5
heh
which uni ?
Visaoni
that was at UC Riverside
Lucretia
Visaoni: mine was just a heres how you can use a modular type with something visual
Visaoni
Lucretia: huh, I'll have to take a look
charlie5
from a 30 second 'review' uc riverside looks quite decent :) ... but you of course have closer aquaintance
Visaoni
I was thinking about a preemptive priority based scheduler for avrs but that didn't really happen :)
charlie5: yeah, it's decent. it's not a problem specific to that place
it's just a general problem I've had with school since long as I can remember
charlie5
Visaoni: a port of marteos to all the newish cpu's would be rahter nice :) :) :)
Visaoni
and it doesn't seem to be getting any better
(although hopefully once I finish up this undergrad makeup sh*t things will improve)
charlie5: Nothing even close to that :)
I was even going to just use nested interrupts to make things super easy
althoug hI can say from experiernce that this is nearly impossible to demo without starting up a whole new project. may have done it in C for a class that really wanted you to make a "thing"
charlie5
mm, i don't think the education system is too close to ideal ... more emphasis on teaching kids how to learn/analyse/think would be good
Visaoni
yup. pet peeve of mine... can/will/have go on for hours
... yet I keep going back, for some stupid reason
charlie5
yah ... evo (former chatter her) was of much the sam opnion
opinion
one more typo and Lucretia will declare me drunk
Visaoni
you aren't?
charlie5
lol
not especially
footy has just started, and might have just one or 2 ;)
Lucretia
(Action) is reading
need to order more parts for his z80
Visaoni
what're you doing with it?
Lucretia
nothing yet...want to build a retroputer
:D
antranigv
retroputer?
Lucretia
and learning electronics
1) get the z80 test with led's on address lines, 2) add EEPROM, 3) flash EEPROM using an Atmega328 and then plug into z80 and get it to do something
4) add SRAM
5) add RS232
6) add sound chip, 7) play something
so retro in that it's an 8-bit overall arch, but i'm erring on the side of using a pic32mz for a display chip with sram framebuffer
the order will most likely change
